On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
